Books recommendation for 5 years and above.
I started reading to my daughter soon after she becomes curious about the strange world. I recommend few books that enhanced my little one to interpret, understand, delve and imagine the world around her. These books also answered her why, how, what, who, and wherefore questions.
Who am I…?
Charles Darwin’s On The Origin of species retold and illustrated by Sabina Radeva
The book that beautifully answered about evolution, incredibly illustrated with lots of information. Reading early about Darwin would allow children to see a different perspective of life. I would say this book a must-read for all cute little brains.
How and wherefore..?
Picturepedia
This book recommended by a friend to us is a great treasure with endless pictures and information. We choose to read this book every day, especially about lifecycles.
The Magic and Mystery of Trees by RHS
An insightful and intelligent book about trees with exquisite illustrations. They unraveled about tree’s life, family, types of trees, types of forests, and different lives around trees. We took this book to nearby woods and enjoyed reading it.
Self-awareness
Antiracist baby by Ibram X.Kendi
Being raised in a foreign land, it’s imperative that my little one has to have an understanding of racism. Though it sounds cynical, it is inevitable and I believe by having early education she could overcome prejudices, biases, and bigotry. This book provides a greater sense of self-affirmation and understanding.
Ich bin anders als du — Ich bin wie du
Translation: I am different from you — I am like you
This book confirms the children about the diverse environment they live in, and about their different interests, abilities, and talents they have. It also talks about the similarities among them. The best part we liked is, the book assures us that it is sane to be different.
Sustainable living
Müll by Gerda Raidt
Translation: Garbage
This is a german book, I wish this book would be published in many other languages as well. I was surprised when my little one understood the consequence of acquiring things mindlessly. This book talks about garbage, how garbage is formed, thrown, collected, few recycled, and most dumped. Also, it emphasizes how to lead a sustainable life. We proudly can say that we altered our lifestyle after reading this book.
What is around me..?
Our World — Usborne Flap book
We enjoyed reading this flap book by getting to know our environment and how we live here. We got knowledge about the water world, forests, dry world, and our world.
Sachen Suchen
This book(German) from Ravensburger illustrated the environment around our places like playgrounds, zoo, streets, weekly markets, supermarkets, vehicles, etc. Children tend to map whatever they see in the book to the place they visit.
Biographies
Luckily there are many books available for kids to read about eminent people. We loved to read the incredible life journeys of naturalists, Activists, and Scientists. Till now we read about Mahatma Gandhi, David Attenborough, Nelson Mandela, Jane Goodall, Srinivasa Ramanujam, Babasaheb Ambedkar, and Stephen Hawking.
